Adoption Services

Counseling and education is provided throughout the entire adoption process through the following services:

Agency Consultation

The consultation provides extensive knowledge about Adoptions of Kentucky and the business practices and process used by the agency. The adoptive parent(s) will also receive detailed information about adoption, adoption laws, the process, financial commitment, risks, benefits and other adoption-related issues to assist them in making an informed decision about adopting a child through Adoptions of Kentucky.

Orientation and Training

The orientation and training consists of a required three hour seminar which discusses regulatory topics including but not limited to the following:
  • Ages and Stages of Child Development
  • How to be Successful in Your Adoption
  • Helpful Hints for How to Work with the Birth Mother and Adoption Coordinator
  • Review of the Legal Process
  • Review of the Risks of Adoption

Home Studies

We provide home studies which are information gathering sessions conducted by a staff member (usually the director or an adoption coordinator) who visits the prospective adoptive parent(s) home to review paperwork and talk with the clients about adoption and their involvement in the process. After the home study, the adoptive parent(s) may provide a personal profile for the birth parent to review in choosing parents for the child.

Post-Placement Services

The Placement Director from Adoptions of Kentucky is responsible for supervising the placement of the child in the adoptive parent(s) home. After the adoption, the placement director conducts a minimum of one home visit, and the adoptive parent(s) are required to make one visit to the agency. The director will address the adoptive parent’s adjustment to parenting, the child’s adjustment to the new home, and medical assessments, in addition to reviewing social security applications, tax credit issues, and the Family Medical Leave Act, among other topics.

Support Groups

The agency requires all adoptive parent(s) to attend free support groups offered once a month. Facilitated by an adoption coordinator, these groups provide a chance to interact and discuss adoption issues with other adoptive parent(s). Groups are currently held in Murray, Louisville and Lexington.
