Adoption ProcessInitial MeetingAfter the initial inquiry with Adoptions of Kentucky, the birth parent will be sent background paperwork to fill out on both the birth mother and birth father. Once completed, the birth parent will meet with the agency attorney and discuss the following:
The Adoption CoordinatorThe agency will provide the birth parent with an adoption coordinator who can assist the birth parent in choosing and meeting adoptive parent(s), making hospital preparations, preparing for court appearances, and continuing with life after conclusion of the adoption process. The coordinator will schedule a meeting at a convenient time and place to ensure the birth parents’ needs and concerns are addressed as well as making sure the birth parent is satisfied with decisions made as the process moves forward. Finding a Match and Meeting the ParentsOnce the birth parent chooses the adoptive parent(s), the adoptive parent(s) are asked to respond within 24 hours indicating whether they accept or decline the situation that the birth parent is extending to them. The adoption coordinator will arrange a meeting at the convenience of all parties involved for everyone to openly discuss questions and concerns about the pregnancy, the birth, and the nature of any future relationship. Assuming all parties involved are satisfied with the outcome of the meeting, the process will move forward. If either the birth parent or the adoptive parent(s) are not satisfied after the initial meeting, the birth parent may review additional agency profiles of adoptive parents. The BirthAt this point, the adoptive parent(s) and the birth parent may meet and talk as they choose. The adoption coordinator remains loosely involved to assist with any difficult emotional issues, makes arrangements with the hospital social services, etc. The adoption coordinator usually visits the birth parent during the hospital stay, makes sure the adoptive parent(s) are doing well, and takes signatures on the legal documents at the time the birth parent and/or baby leave the hospital. The adoption coordinator returns the legal documents to the attorney for further work, filing with the court, scheduling with the court, etc. The Termination of RightsOnce the legal documents are filed with the court, a hearing is set and the birth parent is required to attend in person. The adoptive parent(s) are present only at the invitation of the birth parent. The termination of parental rights is a termination of all rights, without the right of appeal. It is final, definite and cannot be revoked. Any financial assistance provided through the agency is made known to the court and continues for six weeks after the birth of the child. Post-Placement UpdatesIf desired, the birth parent has the option of requesting photos, letters and updates on the child from the adoptive parent(s). The amount of contact adoptive parents have with the birth parent is a very personal, individual choice and may range from very little to frequent contact. Adoptions of Kentucky requires that all receiving parents agree to furnish the birth parent with pictures and letters on the child's development and progress four times the first year, and on the second and third birthdays. Any additional expectations will be the responsibility of the birth parent and adoptive parent(s) to discuss. |
